United States President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States was prepared to launch further strikes on Iran "anytime we want", a day after American forces carried out what he described as a "very heavy attack" against the Islamic Republic.
Iranian officials said the U.S. had struck a wedding party in southern Iran, claiming four people were killed and dozens injured as fighting in the Middle East escalated.
A U.S. military spokesman said Central Command was investigating the reports, reiterating that the "U.S. military never targets civilians".
Iran also launched missiles and drones at U.S. allies Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait overnight in retaliation for the latest American airstrikes.
The U.S. military said the strikes targeted Iranian military facilities.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said U.S. forces had hit Iran "very hard" on Tuesday night in response to an attack on American forces in Jordan.
"They gave a little love tap, but we hit them very hard last night," Trump said.
He said the U.S. had "taken out all of the new equipment that they tried to build along the Strait of Hormuz".
"It was a very heavy attack last night," Trump said. "And we're prepared to do another one anytime we want."
Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said on Wednesday that two oil tankers caught fire after striking mines while transiting the Strait of Hormuz outside a route designated by Iranian forces.
The Guard said the tankers had attempted to use what it described as an illegal route "at the urging of the U.S. military" before "striking mines and exploding". It said both vessels were on fire.
