United States President Donald Trump will meet with the two top Democrats in Congress this week as lawmakers face a looming deadline to avoid a government shutdown, CNBC reported, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected just days before the 30 September deadline for Congress to pass a funding resolution to keep the federal government operating.
The exact timing has not yet been confirmed.
Negotiations remain deadlocked as Democrats insist that any spending deal include an extension of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced tax credits, which reduce the cost of health insurance purchased on the Obamacare exchanges. The credits are currently scheduled to expire at the end of 2025.
Republicans, however, have shown little willingness to agree to the demand, leaving prospects for a resolution uncertain.
Schumer has repeatedly urged Trump to meet with him and Jeffries to break the impasse, warning over the weekend that the stakes are too high for inaction.
