United States President Donald Trump said he wants to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran.
On Truth Social, Trump said reports that the U.S. is working with Israel against Iran are “greatly exaggerated" and that he would like to start working on the deal with Iran immediately.
“I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon,” he posted.
“I would much prefer a Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement, which will let Iran peacefully grow and prosper.”
In 2018, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a nuclear deal negotiated by former president Barack Obama.
These comments come just a day after he signed a memorandum imposing a maximum pressure campaign on the Islamic Republic.
The memorandum denies Iran all paths to a nuclear weapon and imposes economic pressure on the Government of Iran.
Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member Iran is the third biggest oil producer in the cartel. U.S. crude oil and global benchmark Brent futures were trading more than 1% lower on Wednesday morning.
