Toyota was the most-searched car brand in Australia in 2024, though Tesla dominated in the United States and much of Europe.
Toyota maintained the top Google search ranking in 64 countries, according to a report by Compare the Market. This is equal to its share in 2023.
“It’s not surprising to see Toyota still at the top multiple years running. Toyota is such a strong brand with a great reputation that they’ve maintained for years,” said Adrian Taylor, Compare the Market’s executive general manager of general insurance.
“However, it is interesting to see Tesla continue to be number one in specific countries and competing with brands that have long been strong in particular countries, like Ford in the USA and Volvo in Sweden,” Taylor said.
Tesla and BMW took second and third place in the rankings, respectively. Both brands saw gains from 2023; Tesla’s share grew from 29 to 34 countries, while BMW’s grew from 26 to 30 countries.
Tesla was the most searched brand in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, and Egypt.
BMW was dominant in China, Spain, and much of Eastern Europe, including Poland and Hungary.
As well as Australia, Toyota remained successful across Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Latin America, including nations like South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
Toyota is preparing to open Woven City, a residential area near Mount Fuji where it will test and develop new technologies.
While BYD sold the most electric vehicles of any company in 2024’s fourth quarter, it only secured the top search ranking in Nepal and Uzbekistan.
Toyota’s (NYSE: TM) share price closed at US$193.12, up from its previous close at $190.39. Its market capitalisation is $253.6 billion.
