Thailand's new laws granting same-sex marriage have officially come into effect.
The new landmark law, Thailand's Marriage Equality Law, gives full legal, financial and medical rights for marriage partners of any gender an was praised by the United Nations as the best example of a non-discrimination policy for other member states to follow.
Some of the closest neighbouring countries to Thailand, including Myanmar and Malaysia, still heavily criminalise homosexuality.
Meanwhile, Bangkok Pride is looking to break a record with hopes for over 500 couples in the capital and nearly 1500 nationwide to officially register their marriages.
The aim for the number of couples nationwide is specifically set at 1148, in a symbolic move against section 1448 of the Thai Civil and Commercial Code, which previously stated "marriage can only take place between a man and a woman".
This would break the previous record for the largest LGBTQIA+ marriage registration, set in Brazil back in 2014.
