Tasmania will have its fourth election in four years, the state's governor has confirmed.
Governor Barbara Baker announced overnight that Tasmanians will vote on July 19, just 16 months after the last state election.
The snap election came at the request of the current Liberal premier, Jeremy Rockliff, who visited Baker on Tuesday to request it.
She then stated she would take the rest of the week to weigh up all available options for the state, including Labor forming a minority government and Rockliff stepping down as leader, but ultimately called another election.
This is a result of a no confidence vote against Rockliff, which passed narrowly by 18 votes to 17 last week, raised by the state's Opposition leader Dean Winter.
In a statement following the Governor's announcement, Rockliff said that another election was unwanted.
“Another election is not what I wanted, and I know that it’s not what Tasmanians wanted,” he wrote
“But it was forced upon us by the Leader of the Opposition. So let’s get on with it.”
