Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that United States President Donald Trump’s second administration will “restore order” in Europe.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, Putin warned Europe will quickly “stand at the feet of the master” after Trump caused global market chaos when he confirmed large tariffs for key trading nations.
He made the decision over the weekend to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada and a 10% levy on goods from China, set to come into effect Tuesday local time.
Trump also said tariffs on the European Union could follow “pretty soon”, causing concern with key European allies to the U.S.
Speaking to a pro-Kremlin journalist, Putin said that Trump, “with his character, with his persistence, he will restore order there quite quickly. And all of them, you will see — it will happen quickly, soon — they will all stand at the feet of the master and will wag their tails a little. Everything will fall into place.”
The sentiment was echoed by press secretary Dmitry Peskov in his daily press briefing on Monday (Tuesday AEDT) saying that they were watching “tensions” rise between the U.S. and its allies and that the “have no desire to be associated with all this in any way.”
