Nancy Pelosi, the only female speaker of the United States House of Representatives, is set to retire from Congress.
Pelosi, age 85, announced this week in a social media video that she would not be seeking re-election after a 38-year Congressional career.
Pelosi was first elected in 1987 and went on to make history as the House’s first-ever female speaker in 2007.
She is still the only woman to have been in the position, which she held from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
“With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative," Pelosi said
"As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our Democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”
