The crowds for the Australian Open 2025 have broken records, with the spending to match.
For the last fortnight, Melbourne played host to the annual tennis tournament, boosting the economy through tourism and local spending, with accommodation seeing the biggest benefit this year.
Both international and domestic visitors spent more than $111 million on accommodation across hotels, motels and serviced apartments, according to the latest transaction data from NAB.
Ascott Australasia, an accommodation group, enjoyed the increased tourism from the tournament, reporting a 16% jump in demand.
However, it’s not just hotels that benefit from the grand slam economy.
Businesses around Melbourne Park precinct, where the tennis is played, got a $74 million spending injection, up 2% from last year.
Melbourne’s pubs, bars and restaurants enjoyed than $275 million was spent over the fortnight and a 3% uplift in spending compared to the last Australian Open.
“Major events like the Australian Open not only generate direct spending but also create a ripple effect with flow through benefits for the wider economy, retailers, transport services and tourism operators," said NAB Business Banking Executive Julie Rynski.
