Both state and federal governments have pledged over $40 million to help boost the regional community of Whyalla, South Australia.
The bulk of the funding will be a cash injection towards upgrading the local airport to allow for larger aircraft, with the Federal government putting forward $16.2 million and the South Australia government fronting $13.8 million.
SA Premier Peter Malinauskas announced the funding on Thursday, saying the funding was a commitment to investing in the city, despite uncertainty for it's economic future following the loss of 350 jobs as local steelworks begin to wrap up mining hematite.
The federal government will also invest $3.14 million into a long-awaited foreshore development.
Described as a "shovel ready" plan, the Whyalla City Council's foreshore development was first announced in late 2021.
The project already had $3 million of its own funding on the cards, but was "reliant" on external funding to get the ball rolling, according to Mayor Phill Stone.
A further $5 million from the state government will fund upgrades to the Whyalla Surf Club and Cafe.
