Republicans have introduced a bill that would allow United States President-elect Donald Trump to enter into negotiations with Denmark to acquire Greenland.
The bill is called "Make Greenland Great Again Act," according to the offices of Republican U.S. representatives Andy Ogles who is leading the bill.
A copy of the draft bill was reported by local news on Monday morning (Tuesday AEDT), and follows a visit to the island territory last week by Trump's son, Donald Jr.
Trump has previously stated that he wants to make Greenland a part of the United States and does not rule out using military or economic power to persuade Denmark to hand it over. Republicans won a narrow majority in the House and Senate in the 5 November U.S. elections.
Greenland has been controlled by Denmark for centuries and is subject to the Danish constitution, meaning any change to its legal status would require a constitutional amendment.
Prime Minister Mute Egede and repeatedly said the island is not for sale.
To be approved by Congress, the bill would most likely need Democratic support and some centrist Democrats have said they won't rule out working with Trump on the idea, emphasising the geopolitical importance of both territories.
