A Federal Judge has heard arguments to keep the Federal Governor, Lisa Cook at her post despite President Donald Trump’s efforts to terminate her over mortgage fraud allegations.
Cook’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, remarked that Cook should stay in her job as the lawsuit plays out.
"She should not be taken out of her office, she shouldn't be disconnected from her electronics," he said.
"She should do all the things that she did a week ago before all this started, because that is the status quo."
Lowell also asked the district court to issue a temporary restraining order after finding Trump’s termination attempts unlawful.
Following this, Democratic Rep Ro Khanna told NBC she thinks Cook should release her mortgage documents as she fights the lawsuit against Trump.
“She should be transparent so that we see that this is just a political football,” Khanna, a leading progressive voice from California, said on "Meet the Press with Kristen Welker".
Cook was appointed by Biden in May 2022 to see out a 14-year term until January 2038, and she alleges Trump’s move violates the Federal Reserve Act, where the President can only remove a member from the Board of Governors “for cause”.
This also comes as Trump continues to mount pressure on the Federal Reserve, particularly its Chair Jerome Powell, to lower interest rates.
Cook voted alongside Powell and most of the other members in July to maintain U.S. interest rates at the Fed’s last rate-setting meeting at the end of July.
