Over 100 people were killed in Gaza from an Israeli strike, despite Israel saying it was committed to the United States-backed ceasefire.
The strikes were in retaliation for the killing of an Israeli soldier in Gaza earlier this week. Israel said the soldier was attacked by gunmen on territory within the “yellow line” where its troops withdrew under the truce.
Hamas has denied blame for the soldier's death, and Israel’s following strikes marked the escalation of violence in Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect on 10 October.
The Gaza health ministry said 46 children and 20 women were among the 104 killed in the airstrikes.
While Israel affirmed its intent to hold up the ceasefire, it announced it had carried out another air strike in the north of Gaza, where its weapons had been stored, killing two people.
The strikes targeted dozens of Hamas militants across the enclave as well as weapons depots and tunnels belonging to the group.
In response to the airstrikes, U.S. President Donald Trump said nothing was going to jeopardise the ceasefire.
"As I understand it, they took out an Israeli soldier," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
"So the Israelis hit back and they should hit back. When that happens, they should hit back.”
According to Gaza health authorities, 68,000 people have been killed since Israel launched its two-year-long military assault on Gaza in October 2023.
