The Israeli military said it has entered the first stages of its planned assault and takeover of Gaza City.
Around 60,000 reservists are being called upon for the expanded military operation in September to free up active duty personnel for the operation.
“We have begun the preliminary actions and the initial stages of the offensive on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding positions on the outskirts of Gaza City,” Israeli military spokesman Effie Defrin told reporters on Wednesday.
“We will intensify the strikes on Hamas in Gaza City, the political and military stronghold of the terror organisation.”
To minimise harm to civilians, Defrin said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will be warning citizens to allow them to evacuate.
“We are continuing to allow humanitarian aid for the residents of the Strip and are even expanding it — with additional central aid distribution points,” he said.
A spokesperson confirmed that Defence Minister Israel Katz authorised the plans for the new operation.
This is occurring as Hamas agreed to a new ceasefire deal and urged Israel to do the same.
