Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kicked off the first of a series of meetings with United States President Donald Trump and members of his administration, starting Thursday, U.S. local time.
The White House interactions will focus on trade, with Modi likely to address growing trade deficit and trade concessions as Trump continues to place daunting tariffs on a number of the States ally nations.
Opening the talks, Trump said he expected to “make some wonderful trade deals for India”, while Modi said it was a “delight” to see him back in the White House.
While visiting the U.S. capital, Modi is also set to spend time with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Modi's already had meetings with Elon Musk and Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, part of Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
A spokesperson for the Ministry of External affairs wrote on X that the meeting with Ramaswamy was “great” and an “insightful discussion.”.
The talks with Musk, who is in charge of the Department of Government Efficiency, are expected to focus on AI policy, Starlink's expansion into India and a hypothetical Tesla plant opening in the country.
Modi and his team will apparently also discuss India's intent to buy more liquified natural gas from the U.S - India already buys one-fifth of its LNG exports.
