Hamas has accepted a new proposal from Arab mediators for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as the Gaza Health Ministry said the Palestinian death toll of the 22-month war has passed 62,000.
Despite this, Israel has indicated its position hasn’t changed and that it still plans to reoccupy Gaza and other heavily populated areas after ceasefire talks fell apart last month.
This raises the possibility of the humanitarian crisis worsening in Gaza, which experts say is sliding into famine.
Donald Trump has also cast doubts on the peace talks, which were mediated by the White House.
“We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed!!!” He said on Truth Social.
“The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be. “
The most recent ceasefire deal follows negotiations between Hamas, Egyptian and Qatari officials that were taking place in Cairo in recent days.
It also comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was confronted by Israel’s biggest protests of the war, calling for a ceasefire and release of the hostages. Netanyahu has criticised the protests against his handling of the war.
