The Australian Greens plans to kick off its biggest national campaign ahead of the Federal Election on 3 May.
As the election nears, it is becoming clearer that Australia is heading towards a minority government, and the Greens have ruled out siding with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
Greens leader Adam Bandt said he hopes that siding with Labor will help the country near urgent action for the cost of living, the rental and housing crisis and the climate crisis.
“With a minority government predicted, the Greens will keep Dutton out and get Labor to act,” he said.
Bandt said he believes if Australia wants to see real change, Labor needs the Greens to push it in the right direction.
“This election, we can’t keep voting for the same two parties and expecting a different result,” he said.
One of the plans proposed by the Greens is the ‘Robin Hood reforms’, which seek to tax big corporations and billionaires, who have been known to be major donors for both Labor and the Coalition.
“Right now, one in three big corporations pays zero tax,” Bandt said.
“We should tax big corporations and billionaires to fund dental into Medicare, cap rent increases and lower mortgages, bring back free GPs and take strong climate action.”
Another priority for the Greens is to expand upon what they achieved in their last minority government by getting dental into Medicare for everyone.
“Last minority government the Greens got dental into Medicare for kids, and now we want to get it for everyone,” Bandt said.
The party is targetingto give House of Representatives seats around the country to add to the four they already hold across the country,
Their priority target seats are Wills and Macnamara (VIC) held by Peter Khalil and Josh Burns respectively; Richmond (NSW) held by Justine Eliot, Sturt (SA) held by James Stevens and Perth (WA) held by Patrick Gormon.
