The new city surrounding western Sydney airport is starting to take shape with the opening of the first building of Bradfield City Centre.
It marks the start of the first new city centre in Australia in more than 100 years.
The building of the city is said to be one the largest urban developments ever carried out in Australia, and is five times the size of Sydney’s Barangaroo.
Western Parkland City Authority described the vision for the centre about 40 kilometres west of Sydney's CBD, in the City of Liverpool, as “a beautiful and sustainable city that will be green, advanced, and connected to world-class transport”.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said the new airport is expected to bring a lot to the rich and diverse region of the city.
“With Bradfield and the Aerotropolis, we’re giving kids in Western Sydney the opportunity to dream about a future with high quality jobs close to home.”
The Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) is the beginning of what the government is calling an “innovation ecosystem” said to boost the NSW manufacturing industry, and is the first step in delivering the new city of Bradfield at the heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis - said to be 40 times the size of Sydney CBD.
The completed facility, known as First Building, was designed by Hassell, and is sited adjacent to a proposed second building by Architectus, Aileen Sage Architects, Jacobs and Tyrell Studio.
First building is home to offices, an advanced manufacturing hall encased in glazing so that visitors can witness prototypes and new technologies being tested, a multipurpose space for exhibitions and events, as well as a rooftop viewing platform and a green roof.
The buildings will form part of a wider innovation hub within the CBD.
Through a research partnership with 11 New South Wales and ACT universities the facility is expected to rapidly evolve with the world class research capabilities, infrastructure and industrial expertise.
“With Bradfield and the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF), we’re showcasing the NSW Government’s commitment to rebuilding the state’s critical manufacturing capability and delivering economic growth in the region,” said NSW Premier Chris Minns.
The Minns Labor Government has also released its Aerotropolis Sector Plan which is said to be a helper in driving further investment into the precinct.
Western Sydney International Airport is due to open by the end of 2026 therefore the government is pushing investment in Bradfield City Centre to deliver more than 10,000 homes, 20,000 jobs and new industries to the local economy.
Minns said with over A$25 billion worth of investment in infrastructure it will ensure critical roads and services are delivered as quickly as possible to give industry certainty and confidence to invest in the area,” said the Premier.
The plan developed by Infrastructure NSW sets out how essential government infrastructure will be delivered quickly and efficiently to service the development of thousands of hectares of employment land.
