Disney Treasure is set to make its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida later this month, as Disney sets its sights on expanding cruise operations.
The Treasure is a 1,119-foot-long (341-metre-long) ship that is set to be one of seven new liners Disney plans to launch by 2031, more than doubling its fleet.
Last year, Disney said it planned to almost double its investments in cruises and theme parks to $60 billion over a decade.
The shift in priorities comes with Disney’s ongoing decline of its linear TV business, with its networks like ABC and other cable channels' profits falling 38% to US$498 million for the third quarter with revenue dropping 6% to $2.5 billion in the third quarter.
However, the entertainment giant has surprised investors with a strong outlook for the next three years as they reported better-than-expected earnings for the quarter.
Disney stock has gained more than 28% this year, valuing the company at $211 billion.
The Disney Treasure was christened by Disney CEO Bob Iger as a display of 1,000 drones transformed into iconic characters like Aladdin and Moana to the soundtrack of Disney songs. Jordin Sparks also performed a song written for the ship.
After the Disney Treasure sets sail, the Disney Adventure is set to come into service in the 2025 fiscal year and be based in Singapore, with the Disney Destiny arriving the following year.
