United States President Joe Biden has named influential figures in the “January 6” insurrection as Presidential Citizens Medal recipients.
The medal is awarded to U.S. citizens who have performed exemplary deeds for their country and citizens Biden awarded the medal this year who have stood up for same-sex marriage, and civil rights, been innovators in medicine, served in wars and more.
“President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others,” a statement from the White House said.
“The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.”
Recipients Elizabeth L. Cheney who was Vice Chair of the Committee on the 6 January attack and former Congresswoman for Wyoming and Bennie Thompson were awarded for their work on the House January 6th Committee.
“Liz Cheney has raised her voice — and reached across the aisle — to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity,” the White House statement said.
“That call to serve eventually led (Thompson) to Congress, where he chaired the House January 6th Committee — at the forefront of defending the rule of law with unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to truth.”
The committee’s final report stated that Donald Trump criminally engaged in a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the lawful results of the election he lost to Biden and failed to act to stop his supporters from attacking the Capitol. Thompson wrote that Trump lit the fire.
After losing her Wyoming seat and being exiled from the Republican party, Cheney endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
Trump won the election and will take office on January 20 and has continued to make remarks against Cheney and the 6 January insurrection investigations. He said he would pardon the rioters once back in the White House.
