New vehicle sales in Australia rose by 2.4% year-over-year in June, as utes and SUVs dominated the market.
Across 2025 to date, 608,811 new vehicles have been sold in Australia. Toyota remained the best-selling brand, while the Ford Ranger was the best-selling vehicle.
“Australia remains one of the most open and competitive markets in the world, where consumers have a wide range of choice across all market segments,” said Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries CEO Tony Weber.
Sales of new vehicles were up by 2,850 nationwide in June, an increase of 178.3 new vehicle sales per day over the previous year. Total sales volume for the month was 122,509 vehicles.
The top 10 best-selling models in June were all utes or SUVs, with the Toyota HiLux, Isuzu Ute D-Max, and BYD Shark 6 ranking second to fourth place. Sports utility market sales were up by 6,163 vehicles, or 9.4%, compared with June 2024.
“In a market of more than 400 models, the top four utes made up 15.2 per cent of all sales during June. The rest of the top 10 was made up of SUVs and, when combined, models in the top 10 made up 27.2 per cent of all sales,” said Weber.
Passenger vehicle sales dropped by 27.9% year-on-year, or 5,875 vehicle sales. Light commercial vehicle sales rose by 11.2%, or 3,130 sales.
Western Australia saw the largest percentage increase in new vehicle sales of any state or territory, growing by 6.8% from one year ago. The Australian Capital Territory reported the greatest sales drop, at 9.1%.
While Toyota has maintained its position as market leader across 2025 to date, its sales volume has fallen by 323 vehicles, even as its share of sales has increased. Mazda, Hyundai, GWM, and BYD all posted growth in both sales volume and market share.
