Australia may be spared from a huge 25% tariff on steel and aluminium, following talks between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and United State's President Donald Trump.
While the tariffs have already been placed on Australian steel and aluminium imports, Trump has said he will give “great consideration” to an exemption for Australia after a phone call with Albanese.
Speaking to a press conference after the call, the Prime Minister said he was confident that Australia would get an exemption, as Trump continues to place a wave of similar tariffs on other Commonwealth nations.

“I presented Australia’s case for an exemption and we agreed on wording to say publicly, which is that the US President agreed that an exemption was under consideration in the interests of both our countries”, said Albanese via a post on X.
“I look forward to working closely with President Trump to create jobs and deliver benefits for both our nations.”
At the press conference he also confirmed further talks around the tariffs would take place on 24 and 25 February in Washington DC with “senior US representatives”.
