The Trump administration has said it would like to require 5 years of social media history for visa applications moving forward.
The new rules would impact citizens of 40 currently visa-exempt nations, including Australia.
Social media history dating back to 2019, five years of phone numbers and 10 years of email addresses would be required for “enhanced vetting”.

Visa-exempt countries can currently head to the United States with an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), rather than applying for a tourist visa, which is a significantly quicker process.
The new plan was outlined in a proposal notice from Customs and Border Protection in the Federal Register this week, and is now open for public comment till early January.
