Apple has launched its TV+ streaming service on Android devices, the second major Apple app to make the jump across operating systems.
The Apple TV app can now be downloaded from Android phones and tablets’ Google Play Store. Apple TV+ was previously solely available on Apple’s operating system and third-party TV platforms.
“Available around the world, the Apple TV app for Android was built from the ground up to deliver Android users a familiar and intuitive interface,” according to Apple.
Apple has typically been reluctant to release its apps on Android devices, with Apple Music being the only other major Apple service that can be downloaded on Android.
While Android users will not be able to rent or purchase movies through Apple TV, the app allows downloads for offline viewing. The app will also track users’ viewing progress across devices, letting viewers continue watching from where they left off.
The app is integrated with the Play Store’s purchase system, allowing users to pay for Apple TV+ subscriptions through their Play Store account. Pricing will remain the same on Android.
Apple TV+ will host Major League Soccer’s 2025 season from 22 February, with its MLS Season Pass subscription package available in Android’s Apple TV+ app. Apple struck a 10-year broadcasting deal with the league in 2022.
Although Apple TV+ does not release user metrics, Forbes Home estimated last year that it had 25 million subscribers in the United States.
The streaming service’s content is entirely original. Apple is reportedly seeking to licence its original films to third parties, however, including TV networks and stores.
Android represents 72.2% of the global mobile operating system market, according to Statcounter. Apple represents 27.3%.
Apple’s share price (NASDAQ: AAPL) closed at US$236.87, up from its previous close at $232.62. Its market capitalisation is $3.56 trillion.
