Asian-Pacific markets opened higher on Friday despite a volatile session for major United States indices overnight.
By 11:40 am AEDT (12:40 am GMT) the ASX 200 had added 0.3% and South Korea’s Kospi 200 gained 1.6% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 was closed for a public holiday.
In the U.S., major indices closed lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down by 0.4% while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell 0.2% apiece.
Among individual companies, gains were led by Vistra Corp, Constellation Energy and Texas Pacific Land Corp, up by 8.6%, 8.4% and 6.7% respectively.
Losses were led by Tesla, down 6.1%, General Motors, falling 3.6% and PPG Industries, down 3.4%.
Among commodities, spot gold added $33.24 or 1.3% to US$2,658.23 per ounce, while Brent crude oil gained $1.29 or 1.7% to $75.93 per barrel.
In China, the Shanghai Composite fell 2.7% while the CSI 300 fell 2.9%.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index lost 2.2% to close at 19,623.3 points, while the Indian BSE Sensex added 1.8% to 79,943.7.
Among European markets, U.K.’s FTSE 100 added 1.1% to 8,260.1, Germany’s DAX gained 0.6% to 20,024.7 and the French CAC 40 gained 0.2% to 7,393.8.
