Asia-Pacific markets opened mixed on Tuesday following a divergent session on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average soared while the Nasdaq Composite declined as investors shifted out of tech stocks.
By 11:45 am AEDT (12:45 am GMT) the ASX 200 and Kospi 200 added 0.4% apiece, while the Nikkei 225 lost 1.1% following a public holiday in the previous session.
Overnight in the United States, the Dow rose 358.7 points, or 0.9%, to 42,297.1 as investors favoured non-tech sectors like Caterpillar, JPMorgan, and UnitedHealth. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.4% to 19,088.1, while the S&P 500 edged up 0.2% to 5,836.2.
Top gainers included The Mosaic Co Revvity and CF Industries Holdings, adding 8%, 7.8%, and 7.5%, respectively. The biggest decliners were Moderna Inc, down 16.8%, Edison International, falling 11.9%, and Constellation Energy Corp, which shed 8.5%.
In China, the Shanghai Composite Index and CSI 300 declined 0.3% apiece to 3,160.8 and 3,722.5 respectively, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 1% to close at 18,874.1.
Indian equities mirrored the regional trend, with the BSE SENSEX falling 1.4% to 76,330.
European markets followed suit, closing lower. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 Index slipped 0.3% to 8,224.2. Germany’s DAX fell 0.4% to 20,132.9, and France’s CAC 40 declined 0.3% to 7,408.6.
