Australia's Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton has launched a new advertisement in his latest bid to appeal to voters ahead of the federal election.
Dutton's latest pre-election campaign focuses on showing voters his “human” side.
In the ad, Dutton reflects on his past as a police officer having seen the “best and worst of our society”, he also reflects on life as a small business owner and member of Parliament.
“I learned the importance of always turning up and getting on with the job,” said Dutton.
He speaks to his understanding of the value of a ‘strong economy and safe community’ in his past roles and says “you sometimes need to stand up to vested interests and always make decisions in our national interest.”
Dutton also said in the one-minute ad, “The right decisions aren’t always popular, but I’m not interested in taking the easy path because we live in the best country in the world.”
The ad closes with Dutton making the promise to “get Australia back on track” - a slogan which has been present across the coalition’s campaign efforts to date.
This comes as the latest Newspoll reveals that support for Dutton has increased to 41%.
Sky News also reported this was the first news poll under the Albanese government where most respondents believe the coalition will win the upcoming election.
The Coalition has started the election year strong with an 8-point lead over Labor in the primary vote.
The LNP now sits at 39% while the Labor government has dropped 2 points to 31%, while the Coalition also leads in two-party preferred at 51% with Labor close behind at 49%.
