The Australian construction industry saw a 3.7% increase in business turnover in September, in seasonally adjusted terms, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The 13-industry aggregate showed a 0.2% rise overall, led by rises in Construction and Electricity, gas, water and waste services.
The rise reflects ongoing momentum over recent months, bolstered by intensified activity on major civil and commercial projects.
Robert Ewing, Head of Business Statistics at the ABS, commented on the growth: “Construction turnover has continued to rise over the last three months due to greater activity on major civil and commercial projects.”
Other sectors also experienced gains, with the Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services sector and the Information Media and Telecommunications industry each growing by 3.4%. The rise in telecommunications was particularly driven by continued demand within the publishing subdivision.
However, these gains were partially offset by declines across four of the 13 industries measured. “The largest fall was in Mining, down 1.5%, led by a drop in turnover in the Oil and Gas Extraction subdivision,” noted Ewing.
Compared to the same month in 2023, turnover was up across 10 of the 13 industries. Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services led with a notable annual increase of 19.3%, followed by an 8.0% rise in Construction.
Mining recorded the most significant year-over-year decrease, with turnover dropping by 11.9%.
