The U.K government is introducing an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for the millions of visitors who pass through its borders every year.
All eligible non-European visitors - including Australians - can now apply for an ETA, and will need one to travel to the U.K from 8 January 2025.
ETA applications will be open to all eligible European travellers on 5 March 2025, and from April 2 2025, all visitors will need an ETA to enter the U.K.
The ETAs have been introduced to enhance security on the U.K border through new technology that Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Melhotra said will create an easy travel experience while preserving the appeal to travel to the U.K.
“This expansion of ETA is a significant step forward in delivering a border that’s efficient and fit for the digital age,” she said.
“Through light-touch screening, before people step foot in the UK, we will keep our country safe while ensuring visitors have a smooth travel experience.
Eligible visitors can apply for an ETA either through the UK ETA app, which enables applicants to receive a decision in minutes or they can apply online if they don’t have a smartphone.
An ETA will cost £10 (A$19.53), permits multiple journeys and lasts over two years or until the holder’s passport expires, is digitally linked to the user's passports and allows for stays for up to six months.
An ETA is a digital permission to travel, not a visa.
According to Smart Traveller, Australians are also being urged to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting the U.K due to terrorism threats.
