Former United States President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, the White House has confirmed.
James Earlier Carter Junior was the 39th President, serving from 1977 to 1981, and became just as well known in his later life for his humanitarian work, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Carter was the oldest living U.S. president until his death on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia.
No cause of death was provided but he had been treated for an aggressive form of melanoma skin cancer with tumours that spread to his liver and brain.
U President Joe Biden paid tribute to his fellow Democrat, saying he “saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe”.
“Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,” Biden said in a statement.
He said Carter worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us.
Carter’s final public appearance was at the funeral of his wife, Rosalynn who died in November 2023 at 96.
“Over six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well,” Bidens said.
“He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism. We will always cherish seeing him and Rosalynn together. The love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism.
We will miss them both dearly, but take solace knowing they are reunited once again and will remain forever in our hearts.”
